Hello, lovely readers!


I'm so excited to welcome you to the very first blog of Protea [pro-tea-uh] Event Planners! Whether you're planning your dream wedding, a milestone celebration, or a corporate event with a twist, you’ve come to the right place. This is where the art of event planning meets heart, soul, and a dash of international flair. I’m here to share a little bit about myself, my journey, and how Protea Event Planners can turn your vision into an unforgettable (and enjoyable) experience.


A Journey of Passion and Purpose


Let me take you back to where it all began… Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2011, I decided to take my first big step outside my comfort zone and begin my journey into the world of hospitality in a new place. Not just a new place, but a new continent (It’s just my style - go big or go home)! Little ol’ me on a flight alone, headed to Fort Lauderdale, FL to begin a 6 month work visa program at one of the top Country Club’s in the country. That’s where I first discovered my love for food, beverage, and event management—a love that has taken me across many states and through every possible role in the industry. Fast forward 14 years, a couple of relocations, twin boys, and countless unforgettable experiences later, I’m now based in Frederick, Maryland–ready to offer bespoke event planning services to clients across Maryland, Virginia, DC, and New York.


It’s been quite the adventure—from serving up incredible dining experiences in South Africa, to managing high-end catering as Director at a seaside restaurant on Long Island, to finally launching my own business right here in Frederick. Every step of the way has brought me closer to realizing my dream: to help couples and clients create beautiful, timeless events that are a true reflection of their vision and personalities.

"THE” Dress

It was one of the most exciting, stressful yet rewarding days recently. While working on a styled shoot for a new venue that recently opened in Frederick, MD, FSK Events with a fellow wedding pro, Stacey from Frederick Floral Bar— our models canceled at the last minute and we had to find a wedding dress less than 12 hours before the shoot (and a model of course)! Which led me down the road to TLC Bridal Boutique Inc. in downtown Frederick where they were kind enough to lead out 3 of their exquisite dresses for the shoot. It’s funny—when I got married 8 years ago, I didn’t have that big, dream wedding with the “puffy” dress. Nope! I had a small, intimate ceremony in my dad’s backyard with just my family before my husband and I packed up and immigrated to the States. At the time, I didn’t really think about wearing a wedding dress again (unless it was for a vow renewal… maybe ). But then, of course, I had to shop for dresses for a photoshoot, and, well, let's just say my feelings about wedding dresses got... complicated . Which brings me to this blog—and the real question we’re all asking: How do you choose the right wedding dress? Here’s the thing: every bride is totally different. We all have our unique style and preferences. But when it comes to choosing your wedding gown, the number one thing to keep in mind is choosing a silhouette that works for YOUR body. Some dress styles are super versatile, while others can be a little less forgiving when it comes to hiding those little areas you might not be so in love with. And let's be honest— every bride has that one spot she wants to flatter, right? So before you dive headfirst into bridal shops (whether it’s our adorable local spots here in Frederick or a custom designer), take some time to figure out which silhouettes are going to make you feel like your best self. Trust me, the dress you think you should want may not always be the one that’s meant for you. And it’s totally okay if you don’t get that "wow" moment right away. Don’t let anyone pressure you into falling in love with a dress if there’s even a tiny voice in your head saying “meh.” Go with your gut—this is your big day, and it should feel right ! Let’s talk silhouettes, shall we? Because when it comes to choosing the perfect wedding dress, it’s all about finding the one that flatters you . Here’s a fun breakdown of some of the most popular styles, and which body types they work best for: BALL GOWNS : Oh, the drama! With a fitted bodice and a full, voluminous skirt, this style screams princess . It works wonderfully for most body types, especially if you're average height to tall. The best part? That full skirt hides everything below the waist, so it's a super forgiving option. However, if you're on the shorter side, this one might swallow you up—so maybe skip it if you’ve got a petite frame. EMPIRE DRESSES : Fitted at the bust and then flowing out to the ground, this silhouette has a forgiving high waistline that works wonders for a variety of body shapes.
